Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island off the coast of Zanzibar, located about 6 kilometers from Stone Town. Historically, it served as a place of detention for enslaved people and later as a prison for rebellious individuals during the colonial period. However, its most famous feature today is its role as a sanctuary for giant tortoises.
In the late 19th century, the island was used by the Sultan of Zanzibar as a quarantine station for people with diseases like yellow fever. It was also briefly a prison before its transformation into a turtle sanctuary. The giant Aldabra tortoises that now inhabit the island were brought there in the 19th century, and the population has grown over time. Visitors can see these fascinating creatures up close, some of which are over 100 years old.
Prison Island is also known for its beautiful beaches and clear, calm waters, making it a popular spot for snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing. The ruins of the old prison building and the island’s historical significance add to the charm of the destination, making it a popular day-trip destination for tourists visiting Zanzibar.
